I spent the entire weekend with Daniel. We mastered the fine art of hanging out, took some beautiful walks around town, and had a ton of mind-blowing sex. Our connection was quickly transforming into something much deeper. We talked about everything from the rom-coms we both loved to obscure historical texts. Oh, and trips to the beach. We both loved the beach.

The sex was made to order. Daniel only liked to top, and I was a total bottom. When I trusted my partner, I enjoyed pretending I was being used, even owned, and Daniel was completely on board with that. Just as often, we’d be in the mood for slow, passionate lovemaking that expressed feelings we didn’t have words for. We were friends and intellectual partners, and the sex deepened our bond because it wasn’t based only on physical attraction.

Something else happened that was important to the long-term health of our relationship—we proved we could work when we were together. Sitting side by side at the kitchen table, he prepared lectures, and I worked on my senior thesis. He even got some writing done. The trick was using sex as a motivator. We set goals, and when we met them, we took a break to celebrate.

On Monday morning, I returned to school with a full heart and pleasantly sore ass. I decided to confront Luca as soon as possible. He was important to me, and I’d be stupid to let the hurt between us fester. Arriving early for Daniel’s class, I took out my phone. Over the weekend, I’d muted Luca, and I was shocked when I saw all the messages he’d sent. It wasn’t stalker-boy scary, but there was no doubt he was eager to talk. I thumbed in a text.
